Dr. . Aribert Ferdinand Hein, an elite SS officer and doctor at several concentration camps, was known as “Dr. Death” to the inmates of Mauthausen. Dr. Heim was similar to Dr. Mengele in that he enjoyed using his victims in gruesome experiments. He performed operations on prisoners without anesthesia; removed organs from healthy inmates, then leaving them to die on the operating table; injecting poison, including gasoline, into the hearts of others; and taking skulls to decorate his office. After murdering and torturing hundreds, he spent the next ten years living his life with his wife and two children in his German hometown. Fortunately, the Austrian government had been investigating him and planned to arrest him for his crimes against humanity. Dr. Hein then disappeared, never to be heard from again, although he eventually was the most wanted Nazi criminal.

Dr. Heim drove through France and Spain, took a boat to Morocco and finally settle down in Cairo, Egypt. During this time, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Tarek Hussein Farid. He was careful to never let himself be photographed and to assimulate into Arabic society. Dr. Heim was able to have a life for himself, being an amateur photographer, practicing his new religion and being known as Uncle Tarek to the neighborhood kids. His whole life, he never saw Jews as being people. Dr. Heim spend the last ten years of his life “researching” and spreading awareness of how treacherous and violent Jews are. His neighbor stated that it was well known that Farid was “no friend to the Jews.”

Meanwhile, those trying to bring him to justice continually looked to South America to find Dr. Heim. It is only now, seventeen years after his death of cancer in 1992, that we know what happened to Dr. Death after he cruelly crushed so many lived.
